NewFest
Ensuring LGBTQ+ stories are seen, heard and celebrated
Since 1988, NewFest has been working to give voice and visibility to the wide scope of LGBTQ+ experiences. Today, they are New York’s largest presenter of queer film and media and the largest convener of LGBTQ+ audiences in the city.
When NewFest contacted our team, they were ready to create a new online platform that would support their upcoming film festival and year-round events.
The Ask
Due to Covid-19, NewFest was preparing for their first-ever online film festival. The pandemic created the need for a website where patrons could purchase tickets, screen on-demand programming, and participate in virtual events. For over 30 years, the organization’s film festivals had shared empowering stories and conversations, and we were eager to help them continue that tradition and expand their reach in a new online format.
The Solution
Alongside the experts at L+R, a trusted design partner, we outlined and implemented a highly flexible modular backend system to complement the sharp front end design. We also built a custom integration with online event platform Elevent to ensure that online ticket sales run smoothly and new event data can be populated with ease. NewFest ran a highly successful virtual film festival in 2020, and now has an ongoing hub to spotlight future events, build community and garner support. NPR even covered the transformational announcement of NewFest taking its major New York LGBTQ Film Festival fully virtual, which will continue through 2021.
