RGD AccessAbility

Making best practices in accessible design available and usable for everyone

The Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building a strong, supportive community for Canadian designers to share knowledge, set professional standards, and advocate for the value of design. The AccessAbility website extends RGD’s commitment to inclusive design by making accessibility guidance clear and widely available. The site translates RGD’s acclaimed AccessAbility handbook into a digital experience everyone can use, helping designers apply these principles in their everyday work.

The Ask

RGD came to Mangrove for website design and development support to transform their AccessAbility handbook into a more widely available, inclusive digital experience. Previously, the resource existed only as a downloadable PDF, which made it harder to access, use, and update. Making changes or adding new content was difficult, limiting the ability to keep the guidance current.

By bringing the content into a custom WordPress website, the goal was to make RGD’s accessibility recommendations easier to navigate and apply when planning design projects. Just as importantly, the site itself needed to model these principles by being highly accessible to as many people as possible.

The Solution

We designed and developed the AccessAbility site on WordPress to create a flexible, customizable experience that fully supports accessibility best practices. Developing the site on WordPress gives RGD the ability to make changes and add new content easily, keeping the resource up to date as accessibility guidance, tools, and technologies continue to evolve.

The platform allows content to be structured clearly, supports intuitive navigation, and ensures the site itself models the accessibility principles it promotes. The result is a digital resource that meets WCAG Level AA accessibility requirements and makes RGD’s guidance easier to access and use across devices.

Accessibility was considered at every stage of the work. We used a combination of the Equalize Digital plugin and our own manual accessibility checklist, alongside ongoing design and development review, to ensure the site met accessibility standards in both form and function.

Mangrove also supported content strategy and development, helping translate the brochure into clear, up-to-date web content. By digitizing the AccessAbility handbook, the site makes education about accessible design even more accessible, expanding the reach and impact of RGD’s work.
