Over the years, our team has thought in depth about how we can make the greatest impact with our philanthropic dollars. We’ve known about the “1% for the Planet” program for many years now, and are continually impressed by how many companies allocate 1% of their sales to organizations committed to a healthier planet. We’ve talked at various points about whether Mangrove should join, but we weren’t sure it was quite right for us.
Each year, every member of the Mangrove team is asked where they would like to direct charity funds, and a donation is made on their behalf. It’s important to us that our philanthropic work supports ALL of our values, and through this exercise, it has become clear that our impact spans diversity, equity and inclusion, social justice, and women in tech, in addition to environmental initiatives. Although the 1% for the Planet’s directory includes many organizations that straddle both environmental and social impact, our collective team goals felt wider-reaching. So, we decided to create our own parameters.
Up until 2018, we were donating 2-3% of net profits to charity. As of 2019, we are formally committing to donate 1% of all sales to various charities, which is a marked increase for us. Though we decided to branch off and create our own commitment, we love 1% for the Planet and all of its participants for their significant impact, and for challenging us to donate more substantially. Several of the organizations on our list are also on the 1% for the Planet list, and we often reference their directory as a trusted source of philanthropies. In a perfect world, we would participate in 1% for the Planet and allocate another 1% toward broader initiatives, but for now, we’re giving what we can in a way that makes sense for our team.
Here are just a few of the change-making charities we have chosen to support in 2019: Hack the Hood, Girls Who Code, Techtonica, The Trust for Public Land, American Civil Liberties Union, and the Ron Finley Project.
