Mangrove Is Now a 1% for the Planet Member
Why we joined, what drew us in, and what we're excited to help build
Giving back is an important part of who we are at Mangrove. We’ve regularly donated to nonprofit organizations whose missions align with ours and try to make that giving as intentional and impactful as our work. In 2019, we set a goal to donate one percent of our total gross revenue each year to charitable organizations. In 2026, we’re taking this commitment a step further by joining the community at 1% for the Planet. And we couldn’t be happier.
Our team is not entirely new to 1% for the Planet. Manoverboard, the design studio that merged with Mangrove in 2022, was a longtime member and donated a significant amount of money in Canada over the years. With Mangrove’s membership, we’re proud to carry that history forward.
Why now, and why it fits
Founded in 2002 by Patagonia’s founder Yvon Chouinard, 1% for the Planet connects businesses and environmental organizations through a simple commitment: corporate members donate at least one percent of their annual revenue to a network of vetted nonprofit partners through both monetary and non-monetary forms of giving. The giving is certified annually. It’s a proven, reliable structure that allows for flexibility and helps organizations meet their philanthropic goals in a public and transparent way.
Over the years, we’ve watched the partner network at 1% for the Planet grow in a way that has become increasingly aligned with the range of our own giving priorities. We’ve always taken inspiration from their environmental and conservation work. But what solidified our connection is how much broader the partner network has become. Organizations that fall outside the traditional umbrella of conservation, and who are working towards solutions ranging from climate justice to urban infrastructure and gender equality are now eligible. This includes groups like Girls Who Code, whose work getting girls into technology is deeply connected to the health of our planet.
The United Nations identifies gender equality and access to technology as two of the most important factors in building a sustainable world. Its Sustainable Development Goals speak directly to this. Target 5b calls for using technology to promote the empowerment of women, and Target 9c addresses equitable access to innovation and digital infrastructure. Funding organizations that help close these gaps is an important part of how we can all take care of the planet and Mangrove is honored to support them
The expansion of the 1% for the Planet partner network means we can hold our social justice and tech equity commitments within the same giving structure as our environmental ones. That alignment helped make this the right moment to join.
What we’re excited about
In addition to providing flexibility in giving and added accountability, what excites us most about being part of 1% for the Planet is the ability to help shape the partner network. As a member, we can nominate organizations for partner status, which means we can bring new voices into the fold. We’ve already nominated Black Girls CODE — a nonprofit dedicated to building pathways for Black girls into tech and STEM careers. Nominating new partners is something we aim to continue doing.
There’s also a real community around 1% for the Planet, with significant overlap between the 1% network and the B Corp world that we already operate in. We’ve made strong connections with so many B Corp friends and look forward to bringing that energy with us as “B1’s”!
